History Of Selma Lodge No. 320

Selma Masonic Lodge No. 320 was chartered on December 3, 1872.  The first official meeting of Selma was held on October 28, 1872.  The by-laws of the lodge were written and soon approved by the Grand Lodge and the charter was issued.  The first Master of this lodge was A.M. Noble.  Communications were held the fourth Saturday of each month beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The following were the fees of the lodge established in the first bylaws:

Entered Apprentice Degree: $10.00

Fellowcraft Degree: $4.00

Master Mason Degree: $6.00

Membership Dues: $1.00 per annum

Dr. Richard Jordan Noble (View Picture) was elected Master of Selma Lodge in 1878 and 1879.  He served as Master again from 1882 until 1886.  He was elected as Grand Master of masons in North Carolina in 1899.  On August 30, 1890, he demitted to Fellowship Lodge No. 84 in Smithfield, N.C.

The meeting place of the Lodge has changed several times for various reasons.  Prior to the current location, the Lodge met upstairs above the Western Auto store in downtown Selma, and finally to the new Lodge Building at 405 N. Pollock Street.

The new lodge building was constructed by the members of the lodge under the direction of Brother Willard B. (Tom) Hinnant, who was appointed great architect of the building.  The blueprints for the lodge building were obtained from Old Towne Lodge No. 751 in Winston-Salem, N.C.  The Master during the construction was James Kirby Rose.  Cecil J. Liverman, Grand Master of Masons in North Carolina, laid the cornerstone for the Lodge on June 2, 1983.  Three other members of the Grand Lodge line and three District Deputy Grand Masters were in attendance at this event.
